Orienteering is all about adventure in the great outdoors. It offers students the exciting opportunity to delve into navigation, strategy, and outdoor exploration all whilst competing against a clock.
At Otago Girls' during Term 1, students can immerse themselves in the Dunedin Secondary Schools Summer Series. Held usually on a Sunday morning, students can navigate through diverse terrains, from lush forest and reserves around Dunedin to open fields or footpaths, using only a map to find their way to each checkpoint. It's a thrilling challenge that tests both physical endurance and mental agility, making it an ideal way to kick off the school year with a burst of excitement and camaraderie. Students can participate in different courses to suit their ability from white (easy) through to yellow, orange or red and can race individually or with a friend. Harder courses may require a compass and good navigation and the easier courses see students of all ages competing. The final event of the term is the Secondary School Championship event held over two courses on the same day. Otago Girls' has had success in both events with students having won the championship event in recent years and also having taken out the Summer Series event many times in the last 10 years.
But the adventure doesn't stop there! For those who crave more orienteering action, students can participate in rogaines and sprint events later in the year. Rogaines are longer-duration team events, where participants navigate through a series of checkpoints spread across expansive landscapes, showcasing their teamwork and endurance. Sprint events, on the other hand, are fast-paced competitions that require quick decision-making and precise navigation skills as participants race through urban environments, parks, or school or university settings.
Orienteering welcomes all students to join in the thrill of exploration and competition no matter the skill level or experience.
