Bouldering

Bouldering Club 2025

The OGHS Climbing Club and Resistance Climbing Gym have teamed up to form the OGHS Bouldering Club. Details are subject to change from term to term or as needed.

Dates and Times:

Every Friday, meet at the Outdoor Ed shed (by the climbing wall) by 3:15 to get shoes and take roll. We will then walk to Resistance Climbing Gym and have an open bouldering session until 4:30pm.

Coordinate pick-up/departure with your parents/caregivers.

Equipment and clothing:

Most members of the Bouldering club will have their own shoes. If you need to borrow shoes from OGHS, there will be an additional charge of $15 per term. Shoes must be turned in at the end of each Friday session.

Chalk will be provided or you may bring your own.

Wear comfortable and flexible clothing appropriate for climbing. You may either change immediately after school or use the changing rooms at Resistance.

Bring a water bottle and maybe a snack.

Supervision:

There will usually be an OGHS staff member present at the gym until 4:30, but this may not always be possible. You will always be under the supervision of the Climbing Gym staff and expected to follow gym rules. You are welcome to stay as late as you want past 4:30, but an OGHS staff member will not be present - and you may be required to turn in shoes when the staff member leaves.

Cost:

Fees will be charged per term. Fees may be subject to change from term to term.

- Option 1: Fridays only

Terms 1, 2, and 3 will be $100. Term 4 will be $75 (only the first seven weeks).

- Option 2: Fridays plus gym membership.

$155 per term

This will cover the Friday after school session plus allow you unlimited access during any regular staffed hours. Plus this would include the usual benefits of a membership, being 10% off retail purchases, 15% off climbing shoe purchases, a 1/2 price guest pass and 1/2 price shoe hire ($2.50, rather than $5 per day).

*It is recommended that you have your own shoes if you choose this option. If you do not have your own shoes, you will need to pay the shoe rental fee at Resistance with each visit outside of Fridays plus the $15 OGHS shoe rental fee.

Registration:

Space is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.

To register, watch for notification on Google Classroom. Spots will go fast.

You must re-register each term. Registration will open roughly half way through the prior term and will be announced on the Google Classroom. Existing members will be given first opportunity to carry their registration into each subsequent term. Remaining spots will be first in-first served.

You must also fill out two permission forms

- OGHS Climbing Consent Form must be filled out each year, but covers all local climbing and bouldering activities for the year

- Resistance Climbing Gym Waiver (only required before your first ever visit)

Note on climbing shoes:

If you have been climbing for a little while and think you will continue to climb, it is highly recommended that you get your own shoes. When buying shoes, talk to a professional to get them fit properly - they should be slightly uncomfortably tight and should be worn with bare feet or a very thin liner sock. Talk to me if you want to know more.

Competitive Bouldering

Watch for notices, training schedule, and registration information on Google classroom.

- NIBS Bouldering Series - Dunedin - May 10/11

- Other venues if there is sufficient interest, otherwise, travel on your own.

Sports awards (including Blues) are to recognise those who have shown dedication and commitment to the OGHS climbing community through service, coaching, and/or competing at a high level on a school team.

Students who compete independently or as part of a club team are generally not eligible for school Blues. We would strongly prefer you to climb with the school throughout the year, but some dispensation may be possible. If you climb independently and hope to represent the school at a competition, please consult with Daniel Bleckinger well in advance of the competition. Approval may be granted on a case by case basis. A minimum requirement would be training with the school prior to the competition and other checks as appropriate.

Please see the OGHS Sports Information Handbook for more details.
